Amazon's New World MMO.. Should we be Concerned or Excited?

New World. One of the most anticipated MMORPGs of 2020. You’re all excited, right? This is an MMO funded by Amazon Game Studios themselves after all. I mean of course you are.
They were hyping up their new combat trailer all over Twitter earlier, and then Reddit got a hold of it and.. well, here we are. I’ve been bombarded with messages to take a dedicated look at it and the game right now so who am I to turn you all down?

As you can tell from the trailer, the combat looks.. okay. Honestly, it doesn’t look bad.
I know some people are claiming it looks absolutely garbage, and I feel like that’s a bit of an overreaction, but at the same time.. considering this is Amazon, and this is their first attempt at an MMO, you’d have thought – I dunno, they would have set the bar a little higher?
The special effects look kind of underwhelming, the animations seem kind of unpolished and very stiff, and overall – for a trailer thats sole purpose is to incite hype, to tempt players into purchasing into the game ahead of its launch, it really.. didn’t deliver.
Reddit is filled with people complaining how poorly the game looks, the Youtube comment section itself has over a 30% dislike ratio as of June 14th, and the general reception has been remarkably.. poor overall.

Not only was the trailer itself underwhelming, but a lot of the content in the trailer was recycled, which has left many a player claiming that Amazon are just being lazy with the marketing aspect of the game.
And you should all know by now: If a game is marketed poorly.. yeah, that sets the general first impression for players.

Now, I had a viewer of ours reach out to me to take a look at the Alpha test. Naturally I accepted, because it would provide me the option to record or stream footage of the game.. or so I thought.
Apparently, even though the game is launching in August, New World is still completely under an NDA. Yes, you heard that correctly – a mere 2 months away from the game launching, we’re still unable to talk about it, show any of it, nothing.
So with that in mind.. I figured it was kind of pointless really doing anything with it for the time being, instead, waiting for the Closed Beta to open up next month. At least by then.. the game will have to have dropped its NDA, right? I mean c’mon.

For those of you wondering, I figure I’ll go over a couple frequently asked questions you might have: As mentioned, the game will have its Closed Beta available next month, with the game officially being accessible in August.
It will be a PC exclusive, meaning there will be no Playstation or Xbox port. The game will be playable through Steam which means you don’t need an Amazon account to play it.
New World is an Open World MMO set on the fictional and supernatural island of Aeternum in the 17th century.
There are absolutely no classes available to players in New World, instead, having players create builds in whatever form they wish utilizing weapon masteries, attributes and skills. The game will house 1,000 players per server.

I’m not sure whether I’m still excited for the game anymore, honestly. It definitely doesn’t seem nearly as enticing to me as it once did. I guess with everything I’ve seen and heard.. I’m left a little… pessimistic.
It could be the next big MMO. It really could be. Will it though? At this point I don’t think so but we’ll have to wait and see.
